Do I Have The Right To Teach? // What We Can Learn From The Public (with Jocelyn Chiew)

Acting as an extension to our previous conversation on Hearing Architecture - I’ve invited Jocelyn Chiew to share with me about her experience in design education, and how these lessons have shaped her design with the people at City of Melbourne. At the end of the day, architecture is for the people - and those who will be using it deserve a voice in shaping the way we design it too.

About Do I Have The Right To Teach? //

‘Do I have the right to teach?’ is probably a common question for those suffering severe imposter syndrome when teaching. Heck - probably it should be ‘Do they have the right to teach?’ is another question commonly asked among students when they feel their tutor is incompetent.

Season 5 of Archemist Podcast will tackle the tricky policies, politics and relationships often found teaching in architecture education (or well, teaching in general really). Inspired by a question I had from my first year self and a scathing comment from an interviewer, we will be interviewing guests who are or are not directly working in practice while teaching architecture-related design(to architecture students or to the general public). I’m curious to know what their experience has been, and whether they too have found obstacles generational gaps, imposter syndrome and possible politics within.

Do I Have The Right To Teach? // The Makings Of A Tutor (with. Damien Ferlazzo)

To begin my can of worms kind of season, I’ve invited my colleague Damien to explore his journey of becoming a tutor in Building Design. In comparison to our Architecture course - there are more complexities and requirements. So, what are these requirements? And what gave him the confidence to teach? Join us as we unpack the requirements of a tutor - and of course, the question of what it means to have the ‘right’ to teach.

About Damien Ferlazzo

During more than 18 years working in architecture and design, I have led project documentation and management for residential, commercial, education, community, defence and aged care projects. My career started with a focus on technical solutions and documentation. Evolving and growing through a variety of project roles and responsibilities, these days I enjoy leading project teams, project management and contribute as a technical advisor on multiple projects.

I have a keen interest in Passive House and completed my designer certification in 2021, which has aided my technical development in building performance and better-quality construction methods. I believe the certification method used for Passive House construction is a great example of the benefits of using a process that demands high level of collaboration during the project, which holds everyone to account through data driven testing & certification. This can only be a good thing for future clients and the integrity of our profession.

My passion for teaching and professional training has kept me involved in education, and I enjoy teaching at RMIT University in the School of Vocational Design & Social Context. At DesignInc, I contribute to the upskilling of project teams by delivering engaging training, coaching & mentoring. It's rewarding mentoring recent graduates and offering them guidance that supports building their confidence.

With a vision to improve productivity in the AEC industry, I am keen to work with industry to improve cross-discipline communications. By seeking to understand the nature of the relationship between architecture, consultants and contractors, I can see we share many similar issues. My ideal is to break down traditionally adversarial viewpoints so we can work more cohesively together in genuine collaboration.

You can connect with Damien via LinkedIn or through his blog Revit Link here.

Just a Thought // Have you ever asked a 'stupid question'?

In this experimental series (or shorts) - we dive into some small sparks of thoughts. In this series, we begin with the discussion on ‘stupid questions’ - we hear them all the time, but what does it mean?

Thanks Steve for bringing this question up - had a lot of fun recording this reflection together!

To start this segment off, we dive into one of the most loaded terms of all time - ‘stupid questions’. What the heck is a stupid question anyway and have we asked them before? Join me and Steve as we ponder on our experiences with ‘stupid questions’ - and what our feelings towards that term are!

Thanks Steve for bringing this question up - had a lot of fun recording this reflection together!

About Steve Tran

Steve is a New Zealand born Graduate of Architecture based in Melbourne, holding a Diploma of Visual Arts (Victoria University), Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (RMIT) and finally a Masters of Architecture (UoM). If you can’t already tell, Steve is highly interested in exploring a diversity of disciplines with the ultimate goal of creating meaningful experiences whether that be spatial or visual.

His arts practice predominately explores portraiture through traditional oil painting techniques, capturing expressions of the human condition and giving them their own identity - highlighting the beauty in the ordinary.

As a curious mind, he is always exploring through a creative lens, whether that be teaching, modelling with clay or designing the perfect workout plan.

About Just a Thought //

Just a Thought are short discussions on certain topics that we often hear in our architectural conversations. These are short takes to open up some food for thought! If not ingredients for thought for a wider discourse of course. We hope you enjoy these bite-sized discussions!

Hero Phenomena Ep. 8 // Painted A Landscape That Led To Architecture

In this second part of the two part series - I now interview my colleague Steve on his experience in the detours taken to get into architecture. Evidently - when the first plan doesn’t work, there will always be alternatives waiting for you around the corner. Who knows! Sometimes they bring you surprises that you least expect it, or even some of the greatest lessons to be carried forth! Come sit with us as we flip through the emotions and expectations faced when discussing about switching courses.

*This will be a two-part series featuring two different guests - Elliott, who has transitioned out of architecture school into building design and Steve - who transitioned into architecture from fine arts and landscape design (I need to confirm this). These moves are never easy, but they are important conversations that we don’t often discuss or applaud.

Be prepared for a symphony of discourses that can either reassures or confronts interlaced with tones of idealism, cynicism, optimism, and self-doubt as that’s what growing up is about - messy but wonderful all at once.

Hero Phenomena Ep. 7 // From Plan A(rchitecture) to B(uilding Design)

We've talked about transitioning into architecture, but rarely transitioning out of architecture. I suppose it's quite a daunting move - and one that we don't talk about often. Thankfully, Elliott is here to share his thoughts on his experience of his transition from Architecture to Building Design. What was it like? Were there any pressures? Come and sit with us as we laugh through some ups and downs and debate on which one is better for those who are torn between the two!

About Elliott Kan

A self-professed introvert whose current goal is to cultivate mindfulness and establish an anti-fragile mindset.  Started my life in Architecture & Building Design, and now hoping to build things on the web! I hope to consolidate the experience I’ve gained and express them through a different medium.

I love to seek things that challenge me - from training for marathons, rock climbing or taking the leap into a new career!

The 2 current quotes that are propelling me forward are “I can accept the consequences of failure, but not the consequences of regret.” and “You are one decision away from changing your life forever.”

My goal is to retire my mum without losing my soul in the process!

Having said, what were our approaches and responses?

Hero Phenomena Ep. 2 // Job Hunting Is Really Hard 🅴

There’s always a mixture of relief and dread during our studies about the next stages - getting hired by a firm. For some, it was relatively straightforward in meeting those expectations. However, for me and Shaun, we graduated during the period in which our industry suffered economically, which resulted in us spending nearly two years (or more) finding ‘employment’ within the architecture industry. Of course, keeping our hopes up wasn't easy - and when plan a didn’t work out for us, what were our plan b’s or c’s? And of course, during our lowest moments, did we consider giving up altogether?

Disclaimer: This episode may be emotionally taxing and toiling - as we know that sometimes talking about job hunting is extremely difficult for some.

Hero Phenomena Ep. 1 // Are We Passionate Enough?

Starting Season 4 of the podcast, we’re looking at what it means to be passionate about something. Too often, the word is flounced around a lot - and it’s difficult to affirm whether you are passionate about something by your actions. You can be passionate about a subject and admire it from afar, otherwise allow yourself to be consumed by it…

In this episode, Eastina and I will be exploring our perceptions on what it takes to be passionate about something… and whether we think we’re passionate about what we’re doing now.

About Season 4// Hero Phenomena

Hero Phenomena is dedicated to the paradigm shift experienced during my architecture studies - as well as a tribute to the core essays in which this blog was primarily built on. Season 4 of Archemist Podcast will be a continuation and expansion on the thoughts and essays written throughout the past four years of written entries and my architecture studies. Be prepared for a symphony of discourses that can either reassures or confronts interlaced with tones of idealism, cynicism, optimism, and self-doubt as that’s what growing up is about - messy but wonderful all at once.

Bonus // Time Capsule Revisited: To My Second Year

A year later and here we are again. Dini and I are back looking at our architecture journey in 2020 as well as reflecting back to our very first recording. Of course, second-year of architecture school makes you realise a lot of things, but then, when we take our time to look back on our past, we realise how far we’ve come.

To our first year - thank you for leaving us a beautiful memory…

Archemist Podcast: Is This What We Wanted?// Conclusion

One fateful night in September 2020 - I received a message from a friend who I haven’t heard from six years - who was bursting with ideas about a potential podcast collaboration. Well, two phone calls later, Jina and I established ‘Is This What You Wanted?’, a project that has continued for a busy 5 months. Now that we’ve reached the end - we decided to look back on our journey that has shifted our outlooks and thoughts towards our profession. What were our highlights? Lowlights? And is this what we wanted?
